Driving Safety Tips for This Halloween | Penney Auto Body & Glass Vancouver

It's that time of year again where you break out the pumpkins and fake spider webs. Halloween is just around the corner. If you’re planning on driving in the evening, be mindful that many streets will be filled with kids trick-or-treating, so be more cautious while driving.

Do a 360

With trick-or-treaters spilling out of homes, they may not always stick to sidewalks or use appropriate crosswalks. Before getting into your car, do a quick walk around to make sure there are no small children behind or beside your car.

If you drive a newer model, most will have rear parking sensors embedded in the rear bumper that give an audible warning when someone or something is detected. As the object gets closer, the warning increases in both speed and tone to alert the driver.

Slow Down

Children should technically wear bright-coloured costumes or clothing to be spotted quickly, but that doesn’t always happen. When you're out on the streets, drive slower than usual, especially in residential areas where a lot of kids in dark-coloured costumes trick-or-treating could catch you by surprise.
Some vehicles have built-in sensors that alert the driver of a potential collision with a pedestrian. The system will automatically apply the brakes for you.

Park indoors

According to ICBC, Halloween ranks as one of the days in the year for car vandalism. If possible, leave your car at home in a garage or in a secure parkade.
